What's the scope of classical music today? Orchester im Treppenhaus have been working to expand the idea of the concert for some years now. The multi-award-winning 20-person ensemble has become one of the leading protagonists of the innovative classical scene in Germany and Europe.

Playfully inquisitive about the limits of live performance, they create innovative sounds, intimate moments and surprising musical narratives. Concerts transformed into experience, classical music as modern artistry, always creating remarkable connections to the way we live now.

The multi-award-winning 20-person ensemble has become one of the leading protagonists of the innovative classical scene in Germany and Europe. Based in Hannover as their creative hub and sound lab, they have developed original formats such as DARK ROOM, DARK RIDE, HYGGE, Dating Konzert, Notfallkonzerte, DISCO, and the Covid-restricted CIRCLES followed by its successor CIRCLING REALITIES, often in cooperation with video artists, directors, actors and composers. They are regular guests at national and international venues and festivals, including Podium Festival Esslingen, Beethovenfest Bonn, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Heidelberger Frühling, Klang trifft Kulisse Grafenegg, Bodensee-Festival, Mozartfest Würzburg, Musikfest Bremen, Classical:Next Rotterdam, Festival Theaterformen, Bayerischer Rundfunk München, Detect Classic Festival and Fusion Festival.

The Orchestra has also hosted the month-long SEA SOUNDS Festival on the North Sea island of Norderney since 2020, with the first installment of the new KLANGBLASEN:FESTIVAL in Hannover coming up in October 2022. Its STEP UP branch focuses on in-house education programmes, which include workshops, coachings and productions aimed at diverse audience groups, underlining the ensemble's strong committment to social and political change.

They were awarded DER FAUST Perspektivpreis as part of Deutscher Theaterpreis 2021.

In November 2023 the ensemble released their album 'Winterreise', an arrangement for string quartet, electric guitar, accordeon, percussion, bass clarinet, flute and musical saw, with a release concert at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg.
