What's the scope of classical music today? Orchester im Treppenhaus have been working to expand the idea of the concert for some years now. The multi-award-winning 20-person ensemble has become one of the leading protagonists of the innovative classical scene in Germany and Europe.

Playfully inquisitive about the limits of live performance, they create innovative sounds, intimate moments and surprising musical narratives. Concerts transformed into experience, classical music as modern artistry, always creating remarkable connections to the way we live now.

The multi-award-winning 20-person ensemble has become one of the leading protagonists of the innovative classical scene in Germany and Europe. Based in Hannover as their creative hub and sound lab, they have developed original formats such as DARK ROOM, DARK RIDE, KULT, DATE YOUR MUSIC, EMERGENCY CONCERTS, DISCO or CIRCLING REALITIES, often in cooperation with video artists, directors, actors and composers. They are regular guests at national and international venues and festivals, including Alte Oper Frankfurt, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Heidelberger Frühling, Mozartfest Würzburg, Istanbul Music Festival, Reykjavik Art Festival, Podium Festival Esslingen, Beethovenfest Bonn, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Detect Festival and Fusion Festival.

Since 2020, the orchestra has also organised the month-long SEA SOUNDS festival on the North Sea island of Norderney every year. Its STEP UP division concentrates the ensemble's educational developments under its own roof, with workshops, coaching, developments for special target groups and many other impulses, it is strongly committed to social and cultural policy.

In November 2023 the ensemble released their album 'Winterreise', an arrangement for string quartet, electric guitar, accordeon, percussion, bass clarinet, flute and musical saw, with a release concert at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg.
