What does a turning point sound like?
Judd Greenstein asked himself this question, and the result was his new vibraphone concerto “watershed” for Pascal Schumacher.
At the premiere with the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg on 12 June 2025 at the Philharmonie, the theme of water was clearly audible. But the second meaning of the word ‘watershed’ was also highlighted: the turning point at which we find ourselves. Democratic structures that begin to crumble, especially in Judd's home country, the USA. But Judd ends the work on a hopeful note: just as rivers can change direction, so too can social change. The composer's full text can be read below.
In June 2026, Pascal will perform the concerto with the co-commissioner, the Württembergische Kammerorchester Heilbronn.
